DescriptionOil on canvas (1955). Yates was exceptional as a colourist. In his architectural plans he found colour useful for elucidation, but it is in his paintings that this ability is most evident. He often juxtaposes surprising colours: complimentary yellows and purples (Boscastle, 1956) or reds and greens (Great Britain, 1953). In this print Yates uses a matrix of grays and browns, but centrally he finds a wonderful combination of deep sea blues juxtaposed against the reds and the whites of the Staithes cod and lobster boats.
